The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that nearly one million more people in Somalia could face critical hunger levels in the coming months due to a projected drought affecting the next agricultural cycle. This potential increase would add to the current 3.4 million individuals already experiencing acute food insecurity, potentially raising the total to 4.4 million. The situation is exacerbated by funding shortages, which have forced the WFP to reduce its assistance programs from 2.2 million beneficiaries in 2022 to 820,000 currently. Forecasts of below-average rainfall between April and June 2025 could further deteriorate conditions, with 1.7 million children under five at risk of acute malnutrition by December 2025.
